Payton Sides Horsemanship
Performance Horse Training and General Horsemanship
Horse Training and Horsemanship Lessons
Background and Philosophy:
Payton has been riding and competing on horses for nearly 15 years. Throughout those years Payton has spent countless hours and tons of effort learning as much as possible to find out what it takes to make each horse perform at its best. And doing so while being calm, collected, respectful, obedient, and most importantly being respected itself, by the owner. It doesn't matter whether you are riding in the back yard, on trails, roping, barrel racing, reining, or cutting at the highest level, all of the attributes listed above are just as important with one event as it is for the other. Whether it's just for the safety of the ride or to get a competitive edge, Payton believes that the previously listed attributes are the keys to great horsemanship.
Types of training available:
Payton’s horse training business consists of starting yearlings on ground work, starting two and three year olds on ground work and under the saddle, advancing training of green broke horses, correcting problem horses, and complete training for calf roping horses.
Ground Work with Yearlings*:
Payton has a system of ground work and handling techniques ranging from round penning, lunging on a line, working with obstacles, ground tying, etc.. In Payton’s ground work program, your horse will learn to lead, lunge, and be handled in every way, with calmness, confidence, obedience, and respect for the handler.
*Every horse in training with Payton goes through this same ground work program, regardless of the training level or age of the horse. Once the ground work is established with each horse a system of maintenance ground work is continued each training session.
Starting Horses Under The Saddle:
Starting horses under the saddle usually consists of starting two or three year olds. Although this training is not limited exclusively to two and three year olds, acceptance of older horses to be started under the saddle will be decided on after an evaluation by Payton. Horses started under the saddle with Payton will go through the same ground work program previously mentioned. (see “Ground Work with Yearlings”)
In this training program your horse will learn to walk, trot, and canter at controlled and comfortable speeds. Your horse will learn to be soft to your hands, bending and giving laterally and vertically with ease at all three gates. Your horse will learn to move their shoulders, hips, and full body off of leg pressure. Additionally your horse will learn to stop, roll back, and turn around, collected and working off of their rear end and with the most minimal queue possible. The level of training that your horse reaches, with the more advanced maneuvers, such as big sliding stops, turn arounds(spins), and roll backs, etc. is completely up to you the owner.
